Approximately 80% of students successfully meet the school-wide expectations with the teaching, reinforcement system, and corrective feedback in Tier 1 universal instruction. About 15-20% of students will need additional supports beyond those provided at the school- and classroom-wide (Tier 1) level. Tier 2 supports provide interventions for students who are at risk, usually in the form of small groups participating in activities or instruction that targets one or more skills related to the identified need.
There are two core Tier 2 supports: Check In Check Out (CICO) and Social/Academic Instructional Groups.
Check In Check Out
Check In Check Out (CICO) is an intervention where students check in with a mentor in the morning, receive and track feedback from teachers throughout the day, and check out with a mentor at the end of the day.
Is effective for 65-75% of students at risk for behavior and is most appropriate for students with mild acting out behaviors that occur in multiple settings.
Includes parent communication to reinforce positive behaviors and goal attainment.
Social/Academic Instructional Groups
These small groups are usually coordinated by the school counselor to serve groups of 4-5 students and focus on specific behavior challenges or student needs. If you have questions about these groups, see the school counselor.
